NWI Firefighters Challenge Tradition to Save Their Lives
Firefighters in Northwest Indiana are challenging that notion that dirty is good. Many believe that soot and smoke on their gear and skin is a sign of experience. This mindset is difficult to change. After all, who would you rather following when running into a burning building, someone with clean bunker gear who looked inexperienced or someone who was seasoned with dirty gear?
Cancer among firefighters is becoming an epidemic. Agencies such as the Portage Fire Department are trying to change this culture. They have instituted protocols including performing a gross field decontamination. As part of this process they are using Responder Wipes to wipe down their heads, face, neck, arms and hands.
